The True Cost of Tile Installation and Labor

Your kitchen is one area where the type of flooring matters the most. The high-traffic nature of this utilitarian space also means it might need the most TLC every few years, so you should be aware of the cost to replace flooring to make the most out of your investment.
There are a lot of factors that come into consideration to find out the cost to replace flooring in a kitchen. The most important ones are the square footage and the type of material chosen. While prices vary in different states, these two factors remain the biggest deciding influences.
Tile is one of the most common materials used for kitchen floors, so let’s use it as an example. According to Vevano Homes, ceramic tiles cost about $3 per square foot while the cost of porcelain tiles can go up to $10.
The NKBA estimates that most kitchen sizes are between 100 and 280 square feet on average across the US. Keeping these figures in mind, we can safely assume that a 200 square foot re-flooring job would cost anywhere between $600 to $2000.
In most LA areas, the common average cost to replace tile flooring is $6 to $10 per square foot according to Manta, whereas it is between $8 and $12 per square feet for New York.
One thing should be clear; the cost of installing new flooring is not the same as replacing older tiles. With replacements, you need to factor in the labor cost to rip out the existing tiles as well.
Tiles are the most common type of flooring based on durability, ease of use, and affordability. If you hire a professional, the process is simple and won’t be too expensive when compared to other materials, but keep in mind that different types of tiles vary widely in price.
Ceramic tiles are the least expensive option with each tile costing approximately $1 to $3 on average. This goes up to a total of $9 to $10 if you include labor costs. So, in LA, a total job with the removal of existing materials, installation of new floors, and cost of materials should amount to roughly $1800 to $2000 for a 200 square-foot space.
Similarly, for New York, the cost per square foot would be between $10 to $11 including labor and medium-grade materials.
Porcelain tiles are slightly more expensive in comparison to ceramic. According to Home Advisor, the labor and material costs are nearly the same as ceramic tiles, roughly between $4 to $25 per square foot depending on the State. Most homeowners will end up spending between $886 and $2,858 to install porcelain tiles.
With hardwood floors, it really depends on what kind you opt for. For example, solid oak and maple flooring would cost around $9 to $13 per square foot in LA (including installation), whereas it would amount closer to $11 to $17 per square foot in Brooklyn, New York.
According to The Spruce, solid hardwood costs an average of about $8 per square foot while engineered hardwood averages between $4 to $7 per square foot. Now that you know exactly what to expect when it comes to the cost to replace different types of flooring, you can make the right choice for your space and budget.
